Tips for Organizing and Storing Your Halloween Decorations
Taking down decorations doesn’t have to be stressful or overwhelming. In fact, it can be a peaceful little ritual. I like to do it in the morning, with a cozy cup of coffee in hand and something fun playing on the TV or sound system. It’s a chance to reset, reflect, and set yourself up for an easier holiday season next year. With a few simple organizing tips, you can turn “undecorating” into a satisfying part of your seasonal rhythm.
1. Use Holiday-Colored Bins
I recommend using bins in seasonal colors—today I’m using orange and black. It makes it much easier to spot the correct bins next year.

2. Start with Washables
Gather rugs, linens, and anything that needs to be washed before storing. Make sure everything is completely dry before packing it away to prevent mildew or odors.

3. Create a Central Sorting Station
As you take decorations down, bring them to one central spot. I like to set up a folding table near my sofa and ottoman to keep things organized.

4. Set Aside Overlap Items
Some decorations, like autumn-themed baskets or bowls, can stay out for Thanksgiving. If you go straight from Halloween to Christmas, pack everything away now.

5. Clean as You Go
Wipe down decorations before storing them. If you use wax melt warmers, remove the wax and wipe them out. A little boiling water can help loosen wax residue, but be careful when handling hot liquids. Future you will be grateful for the extra care!

6. Remove Batteries
Take batteries out of battery-operated items to prevent corrosion and preserve battery life.
7. Prep Outdoor Decor
Bring outdoor items inside to warm up and dry off. Wipe away dirt and debris before storing.

8. Declutter the Unworthy
Toss anything that’s broken, melted, or not worth saving—like used candles, torn webbing, or inexpensive items that didn’t hold up.

9. Keep One Bin Accessible
Leave one bin handy for the inevitable item you find after everything else is packed away.
Happy Holidays!
